Winder-Barrow Brad Akins YMCA 27th annual Summer’s End Road Race will be Saturday, Aug. 8, and the 5K run for the marble train trophies will get under way at 8 a.m.

The 1-mile fun run for youngsters 12 and under begins at 7:30 a.m. All participants receive medals.

The Summer’s End 5K Road Race is an annual event in Barrow County attracting approximately 400 runners. The race proceeds benefit the YMCA Scholarship and Financial Assistance programs and the Winder Police Department youth assistance program. The race is a Run and See Georgia Grand Prix event.

The race begins in front of the historic Barrow County Courthouse and proceeds north on Broad Street and winds through historic and scenic Old Towne Winder before ending the route onto Woodlawn Avenue and Porter Street near the depot.

The marble engines will be awarded to the overall male and female and masters male and female winners, while train cars will be presented to the top three finishers in 16 age categories. The oldest participant will also get special recognition.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. Presenting sponsorship of $1,000 includes the company in all promotion and provides a team entry for eight runners in the race.

A $500 donation nets the company logo on the race T-shirt and on a mile marker with a team entry of six for the race.

The $250 giving level puts the company logo on the T-shirt with a six-member team in the race.

Companies unable to contribute money may donate their time or products to the event.

Deadline for sponsorship is July 15 with donations in by Aug. 1.

Race registration is available online at www.gapiedmontymca.org or you can download an entry form at the Y site and from this website or pick up a form at the Y or the Barrow County News.

Pre-registration through Aug. 1 is $15 or $10 with no T-shirt. Register for the fun run for $10 through Aug. 1. On-site registration is $20 or $15 with no T-shirt. The fun run registration is $15.
