Barracuda novices get their turn

After a recent spate of big-time meets, the Winder YMCA Barracuda swim team needed something a little tamer.

The less experienced swimmers got their chance to shine Saturday at the Dacula Invitational, a novice meet that was more sparsely attended than their last two weekend extravaganzas.

Out of the 42 swimmers participating for Winder in the meet, five of them – Macy Frazier, Parker Lewis, Daniel McIlwain, Morgan Vandergriff and John Morgan McDonald – won their events. Lewis and McIlwain also earned the distinction of placing in all four of their events, as did Parker’s brother Riley and 8-year-old Dan Allen.

Frazier won the 25-meter backstroke, Lewis the 25 freestyle (he also finished second in the backstroke and butterfly), McIlwain the breaststroke, Vandergriff the girls 25-meter butterfly and McDonald won the boys 12-and-under backstroke.

Amber Duffy and Ticia King both swam three personal-best times. King, also an 8-year-old, swam the butterfly, widely considered the toughest stroke to master, in 38.86, shaving 7.43 seconds off her previous fastest time. Joey Sandlin, who also swims for Winder-Barrow High School, set an All-Star time in the 50 freestyle.

Two Barracuda relay teams placed: The 9-10 boys freestylers and the 13-14 girls freestylers.

The Barracudas are back in the pool tonight in a dual meet at Green Acres in Athens. They host a dual meet with Dacula next Wednesday, then their district meet is Saturday, July 11.
